Other participating investors include Sony Innovation Fund and Bosch Ventures. Founded in 2018 as a spinoff from University of Cambridge, Camgraphic is building a graphene microchip that uses light and electrical signals to transmit data in a way that is faster, cheaper and more energy efficient than silicon-based photonics alternatives.
The technology has applications in AI and high-performance computing, satellite communications, autonomous cars and radar imaging. Camgraphic will use the fresh funding to develop the startup's research and development operations in Pisa and establish a pilot manufacturing line in Milan. It will also use the funding to expand its team from the current 17 members to 34 over the next year and then 68 in 2 years' time.
